Globally, the death toll surpassed 70,356, and the number of infections rose to 12,86,409. As many as 2,70,098 have recovered till date. Of the total active global cases, estimated 5% are in
critical condition. Cases continue to rise in the United States (3,36,906), Spain (1,35,032), Italy (1,28,948), Germany (1,00,186), and France (92,839) among others. Estimated COVID-19 mean
infection rate is 2.5%.
Out of the total global deaths, 50,215 are in Europe, according to figures compiled from the official government data and the World Health Organisation. Italy is leading the global death toll with 15,887 fatalities, followed by Spain with 13,055, the United States with 9,648, and France
with 8,078. Spain saw a fourth consecutive daily drop in the death count with 637 fatalities, the lowest in 13 days, recorded over past 24 hours. The number of infections in Spain also slowed, rising 3.3% to 1,35,032, down from a rise of 4.8% the day before.
UPDATES IN INDIA
After nearly 700 new cases reported in last 24 hours, the highest so far since the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, the coronavirus case count in India has jumped to 4067 with 3666 active cases, according to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry. The death toll has sprung up to 109 with 32 dying in the last 24 hours. Out of the 4,067 cases, at least 1,445 cases were related to Islamist group Tablighi Jamaat congregation of Delhi in mid-March. The latest figures from the Union Health Ministry showed that 292 people have recovered till date.
Fresh cases were reported from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Kerela, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Rajasthan. Maharashtra was worst-hit
witnessing a record surge in the coronavirus cases as 200 new cases were reported, raising the total number of cases in the state to 690. Among the total people infected so far, 42 have
recovered and 52 have died. 57 new cases have been recorded in Mumbai today rising the tally to 490, including 34 deaths. After Maharashtra, the two states worst-hit are Tamil Nadu and
Delhi with the case count of 571 and 523 respectively. 20 fresh cases were reported in Delhi in the last 24 hours. Telangana reported 30 new positive cases, taking the state total to 364 with 11 deaths so far. Active cases in Bihar plunged to 22 with recovery of 6 patients. The new positive case count reported in Madhya Pradesh and Kerela were 63 and 13 respectively. Health ministry revealed that the rate of doubling of coronavirus cases in India at present is 4.1 days.
Manifest rising trend in the number of COVID-19 positive cases among even the developed, high-income biomedical powerhouses renders it evident that collectively, either due to discrepancies in capacity or to disregard for biological threats, international precautionary
measures in the face of epidemics and pandemics remains very weak.
